Review: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! Mascara

Tarte’s Mascara gives my lashes natural-looking curl and volume without agitating my eyes (see above).

Some years ago, I got an unexplained infection in my left eye.  It lasted around 5 months and during the course of the infection my left eye was perpetually swollen and red.  At one point, all of the lashes on my left eye fell out!  Aside from erasing my faith in modern medicine (six different doctors couldn’t explain what the infection was or how it went away), I had to rethink my eye-care regime.  One of the key changes I made was switching over from regular mascara to so-called organic or natural mascara.  Gone were the days of using my old favorites–like Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara or Imju Dejavu’s Fiberwig–since these harsh mascara formulas seemed to irritate my newly sensitive eye even more than usual.  So I hunted for something more benign and tried out Neutrogena’s Healthy Lengths Mascara and Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara because both products claim to use natural ingredients that are gentler to the eyes.  I liked a couple of the gentler formula mascaras but my hands-down favorite turned out to be Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes! Mascara.  This mascara is formulated without any parabens, synthetic fragrances, dyes or sulfates.  It also apparently has a liberal dose of beeswax for natural waterproofing power.  While I’m skeptical of anything natural (after all, arsenic poison is natural), I found Tarte’s mascara to really deliver–my lashes looked thick, long and clump-free.  And, most importantly, at the end of the day, my eyes were clear and not at all irritated.

Neutral Shadows for Everyday

I used to always associate eyeshadow with dressing up and going out; I never really wore it during the day (I still don’t on most days).  There are lots of days, however, when I feel like I need a little more oomph to my look–whether it be meeting an old friend for a birthday lunch or attending an important meeting in my lab.  On those days, I feel like a brush of a neutral eyeshadow gives an extra layer of polish to my look.  These are some of my favorite neutral eyeshadows–good for everyday and good for most skin tones!  MAC Shroom, above, is infamous for its subtle, pearlescent look.  It looks gorgeous on its own or layered with another color.

NARS Abyssinia‘s blendable, sheer, and creamy color is amazing on almost every eyelid.

Maybelline New York’s Designer Chocolates Eye Palette has four great colors in it.  My favorite for an everyday basic shadow is the lid color.

Physician’s Formula Baked Oatmeal Wet/Dry Shadow Palette is highly versatile and a great addition to any basic makeup collection.  The colors can be used for a variety of looks and the middle color, shown above, is a great neutral taupe that has just a teeny bit of shimmer.

Making Perfect Scents

Most of my friends know that I’m very scent-obsessed.  I have a sensitive nose that’s only gotten more reactive to smells since I’ve been expecting.  For me, scents define experiences and emotions.  Scents are important, after all!  They can influence everything from who we choose as mates or even how young we appear to others.  My very first bottle of perfume was Givenchy’s Fleur d’Interdit, bought at the age of 15 on a trip to Harrod’s in London with my Mom. I was obsessed with the perfume–I had been pining for it ever since smelling it in an issue of Seventeen. I wore it diligently every day before moving onto my second perfume love–Stella by Stella McCartney.

Just putting on one of these fragrances puts me in a good mood.  Here are some other scents that are currently making me happy:

Molton Brown’s White Mulberry Hand Wash has the most indescribably, wonderfully fresh clean scent.  It makes you want to wash your hands all the time (probably a good thing)!

Votivo Candles have the best, long-lasting scents. This is one of my favorite candles to light up around the house–it makes a space smell familiar and cozy; the scent is earthy, woody and lingers in a subtle way for days after you light the candle.  This candle is pricey but worth it for the length of time it lasts and its fragrance output.

My latest obsession has been this giant, limited edition Molton Brown Candle in Thai Vert, a gift from my friends, D. and M.  It has a phenomenal green, citrusy scent that makes it perfect for the warm weather we’ve been having in New York City.  Thanks guys!

Sold on Rose Gold

It may seem so girly but one of my favorite makeup combinations is rosy pink and deep gold.  When done right, the effect is glamorous but fresh, not princess-y at all.  A few short years ago, I was inspired by MAC’s Rose Gold pigment and decided to use this color combination for my wedding makeup look (or, I should say, one of my wedding makeup looks–in my cultural background, weddings usually last four-five days).  I couldn’t find a makeup artist that I trusted or liked enough for that particular day so I went DIY and the results came out pretty well!  I get a lot of requests on what colors I used to create this look so here it is:

Eyes

Initial base (all over lid up to eyebrow): NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Yogurt

Crease: A light coat of MAC Eye Shadow in Plum Dressing

Inner corner of lid: MAC Eye Shadow in Amber Lights (Another option: NYX Golden)

Outer corner of lid: MAC Rose Gold Pigment (MAC Pro color-you may have to hunt around a bit to find it)

Highlight: MAC Eye Shadow in Shroom

Blend lightly.

Apply eyeliner, mascara and brow pigment.

Eyeliner: L’Oreal Extra Intense Liquid Eye Pencil in Black

Mascara: Maybelline New York Great Lash Waterproof Mascara in Very Black

Brow Shaper: Benefit Brow Zings in Dark

Cheeks

Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Breathless Berry

Lips

L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Gloss in Blushing Berry

MAC’s Rose Gold Pigment is gorgeous and looks incredible on a variety of skin tones.  While it always has antiqued gold undertones, it looks slightly different depending on what you pair it with.  For this look, pairing it with MAC Amber Lights brought out bronze-rose highlights in the pigment.

My final look–Stay tuned for a tutorial video in the near future!

Bronzer from the Block

Want Jennifer Lopez’s golden bronze look?  Search no further: one of the key players in her typical look is Bronzer.  I know that doesn’t sound ground-breaking but it’s all about how she uses the bronzer–placing it as a saturated layer right beneath a light sweep of blush.  It gives her that flushed, sun-kissed look that many crave.

My favorite bronzer-as-blush was limited edition from MAC (as many of their best products are-hmph). It’s called Solar Riche Bronzing Powder from Mac’s Style Warrior Collection:

Since I’m almost running out of this amazing bronzer, I’ve had to search far and wide for a good substitute.  So far, I’ve been trying out Dior’s Bronze Original Tan Amber Tan 03NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna, and Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder.  What’re your favorite bronzers-as-blush?
